5 reasons why you should visit Berlin
The month is almost ending so it's time for a new flashback! This month I am taking you to Berlin. Two years ago a German guy from our Athens apartment invited the whole group for an erasmus reunion. He hosted us at his place and showed us all the famous highlights of the city but also many local spots. It was a very fun way to visit a new city and now it's my turn to share all my tips with you.
1. It is very cheap for a western city
Usually I don't care much for shopping while traveling but I could not contain myself in Berlin. It is one of the cheapest capitals in Western Europe! In Berlin, you can buy nice stuff and eat a good meal for much less money compared to Amsterdam, Paris or London.
2. Delicious international kitchen
Berlin is very multicultural and as a result it offers a wide range of food. I stayed next to the square Leopoldplatz and there I ate delicious traditional falafel, pizza and Thai food. Another great hotspot to eat is the München Biergarten, the waitresses there all wear traditional Bavarian clothing. It is like Oktoberfest all year long!
3. Impressive buildings and monuments
Of course you cannot miss the city icons when in Berlin. The Brandenburger Gate, the Reichstag building and the TV-Tower are true must-sees. However, don't forget to take a look at the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in shopping street Kurfürstendamm. This church got very damaged during bombing in World War 2 and its ruines were kept as a monument. It is a very impressive sight to see an old destroyed church in the middle of a modern city center.
4. Cool and remarkable street art
Berlin is not your every day pretty city. It is very modern and grey however, the many pieces of street art add lots of color to Berlin. I loved the pieces of art on the remains of the Berlin Wall the most but you can spot cool street art all over town.
5. Endless options for nightlife
A lot of folks come to Berlin for just one thing: party kicking time! Berlin belongs to the worldwide cities known for their vibrant nightlife. Especially techno lovers get their kicks from the many nightclubs that Berlin has to offer. Some clubs, such as the legendary Berghain, have a strict door policy and just getting in is already quite an adventure. Aren't you much into nightclubs (or you just don't enjoy techno) then Berlin has many other cool hotspots for a night out. It is also very fun to go to a typical German bar, also known as kneipe. Everyone is welcome at the kneipe, there is one in every corner (for the clubs you usually have to travel far), you drink a few beers and you are ready to go to bed. However, if you do wish to go dance the night away at a famous nightclub then I have good news for you: public transportation is available all night long on fridays and saturdays.
