Must see in Luxembourg: the Vianden Castle
Are you planning a trip to Luxembourg? Then the charming Luxembourg City is definitely a must. But did you know that the landscape of Luxembourg is also beautiful and that this tiny country is full of castles? More than a hundred! The Vianden Castle is one that has to be on your list. Vianden is an idyllic little town full of history and a great place to enjoy an outdoor drink.
Exploring Vianden
Vianden is right next to the border with Germany and it's a 45 minute drive from Luxembourg City. When entering the town you will realize immediately how magical it is. Cute litle streets with pastel-colored houses, lots of restaurants around the river Our, a few museums and of course the castle. Being situated on a hill, the castle is literally the highlight of Vianden!
The world famous French writer Victor Hugo must have been very impressed by Vianden as well as he lived here for a few months. Want to see how his life was in Vianden? His former home serves as a museum now. For food and drinks I can really recommend the hotel restaurant of Auberge de l’Our. This hotel is situated right next to the river and offers a great view over the castle. The menu is international, I went for a fresh trout.
The castle
And now the main attraction: the castle of Vianden. This looks like a huge climb but it's very doable. It is about fifteen minutes walking from the town till the castle. Once you are there you will need more or less an hour to see everything. The several rooms tell the story of the castle and its owners. The Dutch have also owned the castle, amongst others. After 1820, the castle got into decline but was fully restored by the Luxembourgisch state as it became state property.
